A sound installation created for the artistic residence “LARU – New Urban Utopias 2020” in the starry city of Palmanova, in Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
Recording family stories and collecting old photos, postcards and documents from the community, Memorie tries to weave a dialogue between memories, anecdotes, characters and sounds of this fortress city in Northern Italy.
During the research phase, in February 2020, I discovered, met and recorded the inhabitants of Palmanova as they talked about their city, I explored the ramparts and the moats of its military architecture to find the anthropics and natural sounds of this unique and extraordinary place.
An hexagonal reliquary takes up the shape of the central place of Palmanova, hosting the oral and written memories shared by the citizens involved in the residence. Each of them donate to this installation a small piece of his or her life, a piece of that common history: love, childhood, family, military service, religious ceremony and beliefs, all of these topics have their own place in this visual and sound sculpture made of wood, sound waves and memories.

Memorie is a sound installation by Marco Stefanelli created for “LARU – New Urban Utopias 2020”
